11am Lynne Tolman Illustrated Talk – Major Taylor “the Worcester Whirlwind” Learn the story of the 1899 world cycling champion’s remarkable life on and off the racetracks of the world at the turn of the 20th century, and how the legacy of this African American pioneer is shaping cycling and our cities today.
Lynne Tolman is a cyclist herself, an editor — retired from the Worcester Telegram & Gazette — and president of the nonprofit Major Taylor Association, based in Worcester.

Waltham’s Charles Herman Metz, founded the Waltham Manufacturing Co, known for the Metz Automobile. He also manufactured bicycles beginning in 1893 under the name Orient, and in 1898 created the first production Motor Cycles in the United States the Orient – Astor. In 1902 Metz started his own company on Whitney Ave. to exclusively manufacture motorcycles, and in 1905 he partnered with the Marsh brothers, manufacturers of the Marsh Motorcycle in Brockton, and produced the Marsh – Metz Motorcycle.
Rick Wolfe has been collecting motorcycle and bicycles since he was 14. He spent 30 years with the Ford Motor Co of Canada, 11 of those as an artist. Rick is the Captain of The Wheelmen in Canada, whose main purpose is to keep the history of bicycling alive, and to promote the restoration and riding of early cycles manufactured before 1932. He’s a member of the American Automobile Club of America, American Motorcycle Club of America and the Horseless Carriage Club of America.
