SUMMARY:Metz Day at the Waltham Museum 11am Talk: A Historic Look at Bicycling in Waltham
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a talk with David V. Herlihy. The City of Waltham was a hub of transportation innovation in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s from bicycles to automobiles. In Waltham there were 3 manufacturers that stand out. Orient\, Comet\, and Howe and Stanforth…David Herlihy will bring you the history of cycling in Waltham and the Boston area. \nParking available in the Public Parking Garage directly across from the Waltham Museum\, 25 Lexington St. Waltham MA. Free Admission to all museum events on September 23rd. \n David V. Herlihy is a historian and freelance writer specialized in bicycle and motorcycle history. He is the author of two books (Bicycle: The History with Yale University Press\, 2004; and The Lost Cyclist\, with Houghton Mifflin Harcourt; 2010) and numerous articles\, including annual contributions to Adventure Cyclist. His seminal research on the origins of the bicycle is well known internationally. He is responsible for the naming of the Pierre Lallement bicycle path in Boston\, and for a plaque by the New Haven Green commemorating America’s first recorded bicycle ride there in April 1866. He was the curator of two major exhibitions\, The Bicycle Takes Off (Lockwood-Mathews Museum of Norwalk\, CT 2000-2002) and Round Trip (UCLA’s Fowler Art Museum 2014-2015. \nThis program supported by a grant from the Mass Cultural Council\, a state agency.
